Guilherme Gafi, artista de Santo André, região da Grande São Paulo, reordena o léxico tradicional da pintura através do viés urbano da contemporaneidade. A tinta, a mancha e a cor – elementos que já foram protagonistas da pintura moderna – estão presentes na produção visual do artista. No entanto, o que os atualiza frente aos novos tempos é a forma como Gafi repensa esses atributos de acordo com as urgências atuais, já que retira da mancha sua áurea de subjetividade e gestualidade, colocando-a numa perspectiva de serialidade da repetição industrial. Seu trabalho repensa as bases convencionais – ao sair do canvas e buscar materiais corriqueiros, peças descartadas e objetos cotidianos –, alargando, assim, o pensamento bidimensional que avança sobre a espacialidade das arquiteturas e das cidades.

Mas não é apenas com a disciplina pictórica que dialoga o artista. Se percebermos que seus suportes sofrem manipulações, dobras e torções, organizando-se de modo volumétrico pelo entorno, será possível observar também em seus trabalhos uma referência às linguagens escultóricas. Essas organizações e reorganizações dos objetos plásticos de Guilherme Gafi podem ser compreendidas como um sintoma do seu raciocínio editorial, fator presente em seus estudos e experimentações estéticas. Mesmo ao expor imagens sobre a parede, o artista joga com grupos de imagens, séries de manchas e campos de cor, testando o efeito das diagramações, das multiplicações e das sobreposições, como quem busca analisar campos de acúmulo e de massas em processos de homogeneização. Assim, seu trabalho artístico parte de explorações da ordem do abstrato. E essas mesmas explorações ganham ainda maior corpo e vigor ao assumirem arranjos que transitam entre o plano e o espaço.

Mini Bio

Guilherme é licenciado em Educação Artística pela FAINC, Santo André (SP). Realizou sua primeira individual em 2010, no Museu de Santo André (SP). Em 2012 foi selecionado para a coletiva Processos Públicos, no Paço Das Artes (SP). No mesmo ano, ganhou o prêmio aquisição do 1° Salão de Artes Visuais de São Caetano do Sul e em seguida foi premiado no 15° Urbano – Mostra de Arte Contemporânea – Fundação das Artes e no 40° Salão de Arte Contemporânea Luiz Sacilotto. Fez sua segunda individual, Processos Intermináveis, em 2013, na Casa oo Olhar Luiz Sacilotto (SP). A partir de então, sua produção passou a incorporar diferentes técnicas e suportes, de modo a absorver elementos do contexto urbano. Seus primeiros murais trabalhavam com a ideia de uma paisagem desconstruída e fantástica. Posteriormente, estudos, desenhos e pinturas passaram a ser o centro de sua pesquisa, que se desdobrou em fotografia, objetos, assemblages e instalações. Em 2014, compôs o time de artistas na Residência Espaço Atemporal – Espaço APIS (RJ). Em 2015, realizou a individual DEPRIVATION, resultado da residência que realizou na Cidadela ArtDistrict, em Cascais, Portugal.

Guilherme Gafi, artist from Santo André, reorders the traditional lexicon of painting through the contemporary urban bias. The ink, the stain and the color – protagonist elements from modern art painting – are present in the visual production of the artist. However, what keeps them abreast of the new times is the way Gafi rethinks these attributes according to the current urgencies, since it removes from the stain its aurea of ​​subjectivity and gestuality, placing it in a perspective of seriality of the industrial repetition. His work repositions the conventional bases – on leaving the canvas and looking for everyday materials, discarded pieces and everyday objects -, thus extending the two-dimensional thinking that advances on the spatiality of architectures and cities.

It is not only with the pictorial discipline that the artist dialogues, though. If we notice that his supports are manipulated, folded and twisted, and organized volumetrically by the environment, it is also possible to observe in his works a reference to sculptural languages. These organizations and reorganizations of Guilherme Gafi’s plastic objects can be understood as a symptom of his editorial reasoning, a factor present in his studies and aesthetic experiments. Even when displaying images on the wall, the artist plays with groups of images, series of spots and color fields, testing the effect of diagramming, multiplication, and overlapping, as if seeking to analyze fields of accumulation and masses in homogenization processes. Thus, his artwork starts from explorations of the order of the abstract. And these same explorations gain even greater body and vigor by assuming arrangements that transit between plane and space.

Mini Bio

In 2006 he started the Course of Visual Arts, Full Degree in Arts Education – FAINC, Santo André, São Paulo. In parallel with the paintings on the street, his research brought elements of everyday urban life, stretching through collages, drawings and paintings, presented in his first solo exhibition in 2010, in the Museum of Santo André, SP. In 2012 he was selected for the group “Processos Públicos” (Public Processes) at Paço das Artes, in São Paulo. In the same year, he won the acquisition award of the “1st Salon of Visual Arts of São Caetano do Sul”. He was then awarded the “15° Urbano” (15th Urban), the Contemporary Arts Exhibition – das Arts Foundation and the “40th Luiz Sacilotto Contemporary Art Hall”. He made his 2nd individual exhibition in 2013, “Processos Intermináveis” (Endless Processes), Casa do Olhar Luiz Sacilotto, in São Paulo. From then on, his production began to incorporate different techniques and supports, in order to absorb elements of the urban context. His first murals were focused on the idea of ​​a deconstructed and fantastic landscape. Subsequently, studies, drawings and paintings became the center of his research, which unfolded in photography, objects, assemblages and installations. In 2014 he composed the team of artists in “Espaço Atemporal” Residence (Timeless Space Residence), Espaço APIS, in Lapa, in Rio de Janeiro. In the year 2015, he opened the individual exhibition “DEPRIVATION”, a result of his residence in the Cidadela Art District (Citadel Art District) Cascais, in Portugal.
